This is the principal document of the Second Vatican Council. One would expect a solemn, stuffy air for a highly theological document but it has some wonderful prose. If this is unusually heavy for you, I invite you to reach for it because Iím sure youíll be glad you did. Lumen Gentium was the document that changed the direction of the Church.
Who would have thought that the man that was supposed to be "just a caretaker Pope," John, the Twenty-Third would set in motion one of the most important events of the Twentieth Century ~ The Second Vatican Council. It changed the Catholic Church in unimaginable ways. And most of all, it changed the Church's liturgy dramatically. I have loved the sacred liturgy since I was a boy; and now it flows through my bloodstream. So, on the Council's anniversary I'm excited to reflect with you on the liturgy documents and those changes in this reflection / letter.
